Birmingham has 38,605 businesses
The largest base of any city in this pilot, up about 795 in a year. Retail and health are both far more common here than nationally.

- Small, mostly. 34,365, or 89%, employ fewer than ten people, the highest micro share of the ten cities.
- Care is a major trade. 1,900 human health businesses and 385 residential care providers, roughly twice the UK share in both cases.
- 815 postal and courier firms. Delivery is 1.7 times as common as across the UK, which fits a city at the centre of the motorway network.
Cash flow pressures in a Birmingham business
- Retail stock, paid for long before it sells
At 12.2% of the base, retail is more than one and a half times the national share. Most of those 4,695 shops are small, which makes a stock order a large share of the bank balance. A credit line or revenue-based finance fits better than a fixed loan.
- Care homes waiting on public payers
Care providers bill councils and the NHS, who pay reliably but on their own timetable, while wages go out every month. That steady, creditworthy debtor is a reasonable basis for invoice finance.
- Couriers fronting fuel and drivers
Same-day and last-mile firms pay for fuel and drivers weekly. A facility that grows with the contract book is worth more than a loan sized for last year; see our transport page.
- Trades paid in stages
With 3,795 construction businesses, the familiar problems of retention and slow certification apply. Our construction page is honest about what will fund them.

Birmingham’s public business support is delivered locally through the city council and coordinated across the West Midlands.
- Birmingham and Solihull Growth Hub. Delivers the Business Growth West Midlands service locally. It starts with a free business review and an action plan, and reports helping more than 7,000 local businesses so far.
- West Midlands Combined Authority. The mayoral authority whose seven constituent councils include Birmingham, and which coordinates the regional business support programme.
- Midlands Engine Investment Fund II. A second round of Midlands funding from the British Business Bank, £400m in total and open to Birmingham firms. Its fund managers make the lending and equity decisions, and you go to them yourself rather than through a broker.
What to expect from us in Birmingham
A national panel and a phone line. We do not run a Birmingham office, and we do not need you to come to one: lenders work from statements, accounts and Open Banking, and we gather those securely online. What changes from city to city is the mix of businesses asking, and in Birmingham that means a lot of small retailers and care providers.
For a defined purchase or project, an unsecured business loan over a fixed term is simplest, and our calculator shows the monthly cost. For a recurring gap, a credit line is usually cheaper because you only pay while it is drawn. If a lender has already said no, one refusal is not the market’s answer.
Our panel takes limited companies and LLPs. With 4,015 sole proprietors in the city that will rule some readers out, and this explains why.
One cost belongs to Birmingham alone among the Midlands cities. Its Clean Air Zone is Class D, the widest class on the GOV.UK list, so it charges older cars and vans as well as lorries, buses and taxis. A courier or trades firm running diesel vans below Euro 6 pays for every vehicle on every day it enters, and has six days to settle. Renewing the fleet is asset finance; carrying the charges while you do it is the kind of short gap a credit line is for.
Common questions
Can a Birmingham care home get invoice finance on council contracts?
Frequently, since a local authority is a strong debtor. Lenders will want to see the contracts and how disputes over hours or placements are handled, because those decide how much of each invoice they can safely advance.
Is Birmingham too small a market for a micro business to borrow?
Not at all. Nine in ten Birmingham firms have fewer than ten staff, and the panel lends from £1,000. Lenders care more about how long you have traded and how your account behaves than about headcount.
Do you have a Birmingham branch I can visit?
No. We are a national broker and every step, from the first call to signing, happens remotely.
Should I ask the growth hub before I borrow?
Yes, especially if there is a grant that could cover part of the cost. A grant you qualify for is always cheaper than a loan, and the hub knows what is open.
Can I borrow for a second Birmingham shop?
Usually, judged on how the first one trades plus your plan for the new site. Expect more questions than for working capital and, with most lenders, a personal guarantee.
