Fuel paid Friday,
invoice paid in sixty days

Haulage runs the widest gap of any sector between money out and money in, and business loans here are usually bridging that gap rather than buying anything. Fuel goes on account and is settled weekly. Drivers are paid monthly at the latest. The customer pays on thirty, sixty, sometimes ninety days. Every load you take on widens it.

No credit check to enquire.

The three costs that move first

Where the money goes before it arrives

  • Fuel, which is most of it

Fuel cards settle weekly or fortnightly whatever your customers are doing. A revolving facility fits this better than a loan: you draw to cover the settlement and clear it when the invoices land, rather than carrying a term balance all year.

  • Your ledger is fundable

You invoice other businesses on terms, which is exactly what invoice finance is for. Haulage is a sector invoice financiers understand well, unlike construction, because a delivery either happened or it did not and there is little to dispute after the fact.

  • Vehicles are not cash flow

A tractor unit, a trailer or a rigid is asset finance, arranged by CW Asset Finance. Funding a truck out of working capital is almost always the dearer way to do it.

  • The peak you can see coming

Christmas is the whole year for a lot of operators, and the extra fuel and agency drivers are paid weeks before the invoices clear. A facility arranged in September is worth more than one applied for in November.

FAQ

Questions from this sector

Can a new operator get funding?

Harder, because most of our panel wants twelve months of trading and the vehicle cost sits in front of the first invoice. Asset finance on the vehicle plus a small facility for fuel is the usual shape, rather than one large loan.

Does it matter that my customers are big companies?

It helps. Invoice finance providers are lending against your customers as much as against you, so a ledger full of large, creditworthy names is an asset. One customer being most of the ledger is the thing to watch, because it gets concentration-capped.

What about fuel duty and AdBlue price swings?

They are the reason a revolving facility beats a fixed loan here. A loan sized for last year’s fuel bill is the wrong size this year, in either direction.

Can you fund owner-drivers?

Only limited companies and LLPs on the cash flow panel. A sole trader owner-driver is outside what we place, though the vehicle itself may still be fundable through CW Asset Finance.
