Question

How fast can I get a business loan?

Some lenders on our panel decide online within minutes, and most of the rest come back the same working day. Money in the account is a separate question, controlled by the lender’s own checks, and anyone promising you a fixed number of hours is promising something they do not control.

What actually takes the time

The decision is rarely the bottleneck. What slows things down is paperwork: six months of bank statements, filed accounts, identification for each director. If you have those ready when you enquire, the whole thing moves at the speed of the lender rather than the speed of your filing.

Facilities secured on an asset or on land are slower by nature, because there is a valuation and legal work. Days rather than hours, and weeks rather than days for farm lending against land.

Where speed really matters

If you need money this week, say so at the enquiry. It changes which lenders we approach, because the fastest is not always the one we would otherwise put first, and that trade is worth making consciously rather than discovering it on Friday afternoon.

Between the yes and the money

After a lender says yes there are usually three more steps. You sign the agreement, normally online. Each director is identity checked, sometimes through an app or a short video call. And the lender confirms the bank account the money is going to, which is where a recently opened account or a name that does not quite match can cost a day.

If a personal guarantee is part of the deal, that has to be signed too. None of these steps is slow in itself, but each one waits on somebody, and late on a Friday that somebody may be you.

What makes a fast lender dearer

The lenders that decide in minutes usually do it with automated scoring and Open Banking, and they price for the risk of not looking more closely. That is no reason to avoid them. It is a reason to know whether you are paying for speed you actually need.

If the need is a few weeks away rather than a few days, that time is worth more than it looks. It lets a slower, cheaper lender do its work, and it leaves room for a second option if the first says no.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I get the money at the weekend?

The decision sometimes, the money rarely. Most lenders underwrite and pay out on working days, so a facility approved on Saturday usually funds on Monday. Payments themselves can move at any hour once released, so the limit is the lender’s working week rather than the banking system. If timing is tight, say so when you enquire.

Does a larger loan take longer to arrange?

Usually. Above a certain size most lenders want more: management accounts, a closer look at existing debt, sometimes a call with the directors. A small facility can be decided on statements alone. A large one is read by a person, which takes days rather than hours.

Is it quicker to apply to several lenders at once?

It feels quicker and rarely is. Each lender runs its own process at its own pace, and you end up answering several sets of questions with a search on your file from each. Picking the right lender first is faster than racing four of them.

Why has my application gone quiet after the offer?

Usually because something is waiting on someone: a signature, an identity check that did not complete, or a question about one transaction that nobody has answered. Ask exactly what is outstanding. It is rarely the lender changing its mind.
