Sheffield manufacturers, contractors and service firms trading as limited companies or LLPs can raise £1,000 to £500,000 of working capital through Flowzo. We cover the city from outside it, on the phone and online; nobody is waiting for you in a Sheffield office, because there is none.

No credit check to enquire.

  • Making things still matters here. 1,210 production businesses, 7.0% of the base against 5.2% nationally, the highest share of the ten cities.
  • 295 metal fabricators. Fabricated metal products run at more than twice the UK share, the clearest trace of the steel city in the data.
  • 13,920 companies. 80% of the base, alongside 2,150 sole proprietors and 545 partnerships.
Making before being paid

Where a Sheffield business feels the squeeze

  • Raw material bought months ahead

A fabricator or engineer buys steel, alloy and consumables before a job starts, often at prices that move, and invoices on completion. A revolving facility drawn for each order and cleared when the customer pays matches that cycle better than a term loan. Ask for a limit that covers your largest typical order, not your average one, or it runs out exactly when you need it.

  • Long terms from bigger customers

Supplying a main contractor or a larger manufacturer usually means accepting their payment terms. If those customers are creditworthy, invoice finance releases most of each invoice on day one and grows as order books do.

  • Machines are a separate question

A press brake, a laser cutter or a CNC machine should not come out of working capital. Our sister company CW Asset Finance arranges asset finance, which spreads the cost over the life of the machine.

  • Contractors waiting on certification

2,145 building businesses face the familiar wait for valuations and retention. The construction page explains why some invoice financiers will not touch applications for payment.

How Flowzo works for a Sheffield firm

Our panel lends across the UK and decides on the numbers, not the postcode, so the process is the same here as anywhere: a short enquiry, a call to understand the business, then statements and accounts uploaded securely. We have no Sheffield presence and do not pretend to.

For manufacturers the useful split is between working capital and equipment. Working capital, the gap between buying material and being paid, is a credit line or invoice finance. Equipment is asset finance. A one-off need, such as a large VAT bill after a strong quarter, may suit tax bill finance or an HMRC Time to Pay arrangement, which we will tell you to try first.

Cash flow lending on our panel is for limited companies and LLPs. Sole traders cannot use it.

Sheffield adds a cost of its own for anyone delivering into the centre. Its Clean Air Zone is Class C on GOV.UK’s list, 0.9 square miles in size: private cars go free, but vans, minibuses, lorries, buses and taxis below the minimum standard pay, and lorries need Euro VI to escape it. For a fabricator running an older diesel van or wagon to city centre sites, that charge rises with every job and belongs in the quote.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a Sheffield fabricator fund a steel order before the job starts?

Yes, that is what a revolving credit line is for. You draw for the order, repay when the customer pays, and the limit is there again for the next one. A purchase order from a strong customer helps the case.

Will an invoice financier accept stage payments on an engineering contract?

Some will, if the stages are clearly certified and invoiced, and fewer if the contract allows heavy set-off or retention. Send us the payment terms and we will tell you which providers are realistic.

Do I need to meet someone in Sheffield?

No. There is no Sheffield office. We work by phone and online, and so do the lenders, so nobody loses a morning travelling.

Can the growth hub help with finance as well?

It can point you to grants, public loan funds and the Northern Powerhouse fund, and it is free. We arrange commercial borrowing from our panel. Asking both is sensible.

Can I finance a compliant van for the Sheffield zone?

Yes. A replacement van is a vehicle purchase, which CW Asset Finance, our sister company, handles for us. Spreading a newer van over its working life usually costs less than paying daily charges on an old one.
