What a Newcastle business has to plan for

  • Match days, events and a long quiet stretch

Food and drink trade here moves with the calendar: term time, big events and the weeks after Christmas. Card takings arrive instantly, but rent and wages do not flex. Revenue-based finance takes an agreed share of takings, so less goes out in a slow week, though the total repaid stays the same.

  • Refits and openings

A new site or a refurbishment is a defined project with an end date, better suited to an unsecured loan than to working capital. The kitchen equipment itself can be funded through CW Asset Finance.

  • VAT on a strong quarter

Hospitality pays VAT on takings, so a busy quarter brings a large bill three months later, often into a quieter period. Tax bill finance can spread it, after you have asked HMRC about Time to Pay.

  • Professional firms on 30-day terms

The 1,500 professional and technical businesses are the other half of the city. They invoice businesses and wait, which is what invoice finance addresses.

Free business support in the North East

Since 2024 Newcastle has been part of the North East Combined Authority, and public support for businesses in the city now runs through it. Check the growth hub’s funding listings for grants before you borrow: a grant you qualify for costs nothing to repay.

What we can and cannot do in Newcastle

We are a national broker. There is no Newcastle branch, and we will not suggest otherwise. Lenders decide on your trading, so what matters is six months of bank statements and, for a hospitality business, your card settlement history, which we collect securely online. Download six months of settlement reports from your payment provider before you call; revenue-based lenders read them alongside the bank statements, and having both ready can save days.

Revenue-based finance is often the best fit for venues, but it is rarely the cheapest money per pound, and a business with steady trade and strong accounts may do better with a term loan. Our hospitality page goes further into the trade-off, and a credit line suits a firm that needs a standing buffer.

If the business is not incorporated, we cannot help with cash flow: the lenders we use want a limited company or LLP as the borrower, for reasons set out here.

Suppliers to the city’s venues face one more cost. Newcastle and Gateshead share a Class C Clean Air Zone, listed on GOV.UK, so a pre-Euro 6 diesel van delivering to bars and restaurants in the centre is charged each day it goes in, and a lorry needs Euro VI. Cars are not charged. For caterers, drinks wholesalers and linen firms, it is a line in the budget next to fuel.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a Newcastle restaurant borrow without up-to-date accounts?

Often, if the card takings are there. Revenue-based lenders read your settlement data rather than last year’s filed accounts, which suits a business whose trading has moved on since it last filed.

How do I fund a quiet January in Newcastle hospitality?

Arrange it in the autumn, not in January. A facility agreed while trade is strong costs nothing until you draw, and lenders look more kindly on a business that is not already short.

Is there a Flowzo office in Newcastle?

No. We work with Newcastle businesses entirely by phone and online, and the lenders on our panel do the same.

Can the North East Growth Hub help with funding?

Yes, it lists grants, loans and finance programmes for the region and can point you to public funds such as the Northern Powerhouse fund. It is free to ask.

Can a Newcastle venue take a refit loan and a credit line together?

Many do: a fixed loan for the refit, which has a clear end, and a smaller revolving limit for the seasonal swings. Lenders judge the two together on affordability, so ask for both at once rather than one after the other.
