Cash flow for Bristol’s
project businesses
Bristol has an unusually project-based economy, and a project business needs cash between milestones. We find Bristol limited companies and LLPs anything from £1,000 up to £500,000, as a credit line, invoice finance or a term loan, working remotely rather than from a local office.
No credit check to enquire.
Bristol’s 18,295 businesses
The city council area added about 290 in a year. Tech and creative work rank higher here than in almost any other city in this pilot.

- 1,865 information and communication firms. 10.2% of the base, about one and a half times the national share and the highest of the ten cities.
- 565 film, TV and audio production companies. Nearly two and a half times the UK share, plus 350 businesses in creative and performing arts.
- 14,700 companies. 80% of the base; the rest includes 2,185 sole proprietors and 500 partnerships.
Why Bristol cash flow is lumpy
- Productions spend first and bill on delivery
A production company pays crews, kit hire and locations during the shoot and is paid in tranches by the commissioner, sometimes with a final slice held until delivery is accepted. A credit line bridges each tranche without locking you into a term loan between projects.
- Software and digital studios on milestone billing
Agencies and developers often invoice at milestones and wait 30 to 60 days for clients to pay. Where the client is a business with a good record, invoice finance brings that money forward.
- Consultancies carrying a long tail
3,310 professional and technical firms, 18.1% of the base, many of them engineering and design practices whose fees arrive long after the hours are worked. A revolving limit evens that out.
- Corporation tax after a good year
Project income is uneven, so a strong year can leave a large tax bill landing in a lean one. Spreading the bill is an option, though HMRC Time to Pay comes first.

How we work with Bristol businesses
The work is remote and national. We have no office in Bristol, and the lenders on our panel do not need you to have met anyone: they read statements, accounts and, for invoice finance, who owes you money. What helps a Bristol project business most is a clear schedule of when the money is due, because that is what a lender sizes the facility on.
For milestone-billed work to business clients, look at invoice finance. For a buffer you draw between tranches, a credit line. For a single investment, such as a fit-out or a hire, an unsecured loan with a fixed end date. Cameras, lighting and edit suites belong with asset finance, which CW Asset Finance, our sister company, handles.
Creative freelancers often trade as sole traders, and the lenders we use for cash flow only take incorporated businesses. Here is the reasoning.
The centre also carries a running cost few cities share. Bristol is one of only two places on GOV.UK’s Clean Air Zone list with a Class D zone, covering about 1.2 square miles, so crews, caterers and contractors driving older vans or even cars into it pay for each day. If your jobs take you into the centre every week, put those charges in the cash flow forecast; a compliant vehicle is often cheaper over a year.
Common questions
Can a Bristol production company borrow against a commission?
Some lenders will look at a signed commissioning agreement with a broadcaster or platform, especially once delivery tranches are invoiced. A revolving facility based on your track record is the more common answer. Send us the payment schedule.
Is invoice finance suitable for a software studio?
It can be, when invoices are for delivered work and the clients are businesses. It is harder when billing is mostly retainers paid in advance or depends on acceptance testing, because the lender needs a debt that is clearly owed.
Can I meet you in Bristol?
We are not set up for that. There are no Bristol premises, and the whole process runs over the phone, by email and through a secure upload.
How is the South West Investment Fund different from a broker?
It is public money aimed at smaller businesses that find finance hard to raise, and you apply to its fund managers yourself. We arrange commercial facilities from our panel, usually faster. Ask both if you are unsure.
Do Bristol Clean Air Zone charges affect what I can borrow?
Only indirectly. A lender reads your income and outgoings, and daily charges are one more outgoing. If they are big enough to dent your margin, price a compliant vehicle before you borrow to cover the charges.
